SofTutor for MicroStation 3D, the first of a new type of interactive CD-ROM self-training programs, has been announced by New Vision Software, Incorporated, of Barrington, IL. The training program provides more than 90 audio/video clips with over 250 indexed topics. Narration by Mike Arroyo, noted MicroStation power user, covers 3D design, rendering, materials, light placement, animation, commands, and conversion of 2D drawings to 3D, and more.
"SofTutor provides the first new approach to PC training in years," says Randolph Hilgers, president of New Vision Software. "We take advantage of the power and flexibility capable by CD-ROMs in creating SofTutor particularly the instantaneous, non-linear access inherent to the technology."
Compared with VCR-like programs that run start to finish, with little capability beyond "pause" or "fast-forward/rewind," SofTutor offers a comprehensive Table of Contents that is fully-searchable by keyword as opposed to alphabetical. "We built in the conventional wild cards as well," says Hilgers. "For example, a user can search for all occurrences of a word like "lighting" and develop a definitive list of chapters, subchapters and topics containing the word." In addition, SofTutor's powerful access characteristics allow users to:
"But what's most important is the degree of user control," says Hilgers. "Instead of viewing a table of contents programming in order, a SofTutor user can view a focused list of pertinent topics. Instead of fast-forwarding, a SofTutor user can click to advance to the next or previous clip on the list."
"The bottom line is: SofTutor is a powerful and more productive training tool...a quicker way to the End of the Learning Curve."
SofTutor requires a multimedia PC (486SX or better) running MS-DOS 3.3 or higher, MS Windows - 3.1 or higher, a 2x CD-ROM drive, MS Windows-compatible sound board, speakers or headphones, mouse, VGA color monitor, 8 bit VGA adapter (256 colors), 8 MB of RAM, 4 MB of hard disk space (minimum installation).
